Burwood Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Services
With an emphasis on prevention of injury and mental health problems, this service primarily provides assistances to women and their children who are victims of domestic violence attending Burwood Local Court for Apprehended Violence Orders (AVOs).
What is Domestic Violence?
Physical – Pushing, shoving, slapping, hair pulling, punching, choking, kicking, biting, burning, using a weapon or object, placing a person in danger or any other demanding physical act whether injury is sustained or not.
Emotional – Name calling, ridiculing, threatening, ignoring, humiliating, controlling, intimidation, terrorising, pressuring, destroying property, isolating from friends and family, extreme jealousy.
Sexual – Any sexual act including touching, kissing, fondling, having any form of sex which is unwanted or coerced. Being forced or manipulated to pose for sexual pictures or to view pornographic material.
Financial – Withholding basic needs, controlling all family money, allowing certain amounts for expenditure, using children as an economic bargaining chip, needing or seeking permission to access money.
Social – Controlling and withholding access to family and friends, restrictions and limitations to social outings or every day necessary outings. Needing or seeking permission to leave family home or go anywhere.

The Court Advocacy Services Team can:
Provide emotional support before you attend court, while at court and after;
Provide access to legal services with a Duty Solicitor to assist on AVO court day;
Explain in simple terms the court procedures and protocols;
Provide information and referral to appropriate local agencies and support groups before and after court; and
Provide privacy, safety and support for you in the Shine Room at Burwood Local Court.
Referrals can be made by any agency or individual to the Court Advocacy Services Team
